Women in Building is the Future
The Professional Women in Building (PWB) Council is a powerful network within the home building and construction industry, established to promote and support the professional development of women in this sector. As part of the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB), the PWB Council is dedicated to advocating for, empowering, and elevating women at all levels of construction, from skilled trades to executive leadership roles.
As a woman owned company, Patriot Roofing takes an active role within the Cape Fear PWB council. We currently have 3 full-time active members, but our company has many more women working behind the scenes. The Cape Fear PWB council recently had its 2-year anniversary, and we were so happy to be a part of it.
At Patriot, we are a 50/50 split of men and women working in the company. However, that is not always the case with construction based businesses. On the website Zippia’s statistics on roofing, only 4.6% of roofers are women, highlighting the gender gap in the industry. This is significant, but other construction industries have even lower statistics. The imbalance had remained steady for about 10 years, until the Covid-19 Pandemic. Suddenly the roofing industry was 12% female! Those numbers have since fallen back down, but there is still hope.
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, construction jobs are projected to grow by 4% through 2031, adding nearly 250,000 jobs to the workforce. This growth is not only creating demand but also highlighting the shortage of skilled workers, opening doors for more women to join the field. While women currently make up about 14% of the construction workforce, their numbers are steadily rising as more companies recognize the importance of diversity and inclusion.
Why Patriot Roofing Supports Women in Building
At Patriot Roofing, we understand the vital role that women play in our industry, and we are committed to supporting and encouraging their growth. We strive to mentor women and encourage their interest in the building industry.
We believe that Professional Women in Building Week is not just a celebration but also a call to action. As an industry, we must continue to break down barriers, provide mentorship, and actively recruit and retain women in all areas of construction.
